Softball Rallies in Fifth but Falls Short Against Chattanooga |
Tennessee State's late-inning surge not enough to overcome early deficit |
The Tennessee State softball team faced off against the Chattanooga Mocs on Wednesday evening at Tiger Field, ultimately falling 9-3 despite a spirited rally in the fifth inning.
Freshman pitcher Chelsi Ervin made her season debut, starting the game and pitching two-thirds of an inning. She was relieved by Tianna Salcido, who delivered a solid performance over 4.1 innings, recording two strikeouts while facing 20 batters. Miriam Gordon closed out the game, pitching two scoreless innings to keep the Tigers within reach.
Chattanooga wasted no time, jumping to an early lead with three runs in the first inning and adding another in the second, setting the score at 4-0. The Mocs capitalized on timely hitting and defensive miscues by the Tigers to extend their advantage to 5-0 by the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tennessee State found its rhythm. Courtney Richardson reached base and advanced into scoring position. Noelani Wilkerson followed with a perfectly executed bunt single, putting runners on the corners. Jasmine Blackburn then reached on a fielder's choice, and two runs scored due to errors by Chattanooga, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
Building on the momentum, Jace Jackson singled, advancing both runners into scoring position. Kailyn Jean-Baptiste contributed with an RBI groundout, bringing the Tigers within two runs at 5-3.
However, Chattanooga responded decisively in the top of the sixth inning. A grand slam extended their lead to 9-3, a margin the Tigers couldn't overcome in the remaining innings.
Offensively, Tennessee State managed three hits on the night. Blackburn, Jackson, and Wilkerson each recorded a hit. The Tigers also drew four walks and demonstrated aggressive baserunning with three stolen bases, keeping the pressure on Chattanooga's defense.
Looking ahead, the Tigers are set to host UT Martin for a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series this weekend. The series kicks off with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., followed by the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they seek to bounce back in conference play.
For those planning to attend, the weather forecast for Nashville this weekend is favorable, with sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s, providing an excellent backdrop for an exciting weekend of softball at Tiger Field. |
