The impending closure of Food City in St. Elmo has left many residents grappling with concerns over accessibility, employment, and the future of their neighborhood.

 

Set to shut its doors on April 6, the store's departure marks the end of an era for a community staple.

 

For over a decade, this grocery store has been more than just a place to shop; it's been a cornerstone of daily life.

 

With its absence, the nearest alternative is approximately two miles away on Broad Street, posing challenges for those without personal transportation.

 

Longtime patron Cheyenne Foster expressed her dismay, noting, "It's always been a grocery store up there since I can remember."

 

She added, "Now you got to go a little bit further just to get good groceries... so I feel like it's a loss to the community."

 

Beyond convenience, Foster is deeply concerned about the impact on local employment.

 

"It is taking the jobs away from the community as well, because a lot of people come here to shop and work, so it's a one-stop shop for a lot of people," she remarked.

 

Transportation hurdles loom large, especially for those relying on public transit or facing mobility issues.

 

Foster highlighted, "It's gonna affect us greatly, especially for people that use public transport, it's convenient to get there."

 

She continued, "And definitely the elders in our community, because it's already hard getting up there."

 

As the closure date nears, thoughts turn to the future of the vacant space.

 

Foster hopes for a replacement that caters to the community's needs, stating, "I just hope that they have great plans, and it's going to be reasonable and affordable for regular day people that's in this community."

 

In response to the closure, Food City has assured that current employees will be offered positions at nearby locations.

 

Shoppers have until April 6 to visit the St. Elmo store before it closes permanently.

 

In related developments, the St. Elmo neighborhood has experienced other notable changes.

 

After more than a decade, 1885 Grill recently closed its flagship location due to unresolved building issues and financial challenges.

 

Despite efforts to purchase the property or fund necessary repairs, the owners decided to cease operations in St. Elmo.

 

However, they plan to open a new location in Chickamauga later this year, offering positions to all St. Elmo staff at their other establishments.

 

On a brighter note, the community is set to host its first-ever St. Elmo Porchfest on May 3.

 

This free event will feature live performances by 26 local bands and musicians, food trucks at Triangle Park, and various activities, fostering community connection and celebrating local talent.

 

As St. Elmo navigates these transitions, residents remain hopeful that new opportunities will emerge to enrich their vibrant neighborhood.
